Chapter 19 Snippet

The look in her eyes bespoke more. General Talros reached into a hidden pocket for a coin. He passed it into the woman’s hand and her fingers closed upon it. A quick test of the teeth and a heartbeat later, the coin had vanished.

“In the houses beyond the old section. There are matches there sometimes. I see this girl, and she hunts among the ruins. One house with a broken shutter near the front, many times. Our boys say she takes coin from them on occasion. We went once to check her hiding-place and found a man’s footsteps in the dirt. The girl does not come anymore.”
